The Old Masters at Their Best
Pharoah's Horses
Pharoah's Horses by John Frederick Herring is one of the greatest of the Old Masters works. It is certainly the most popular. I have seen many old and reproduction pieces of this image, but this is the best color image I have seen yet. Herring painted in oils for the most part, so most of the black and white images were from engravings and the colored ones from the engravings are only fair. This image may well be from the original oil. It is certainly a classic and has been treated as such with a simple antique style black and gold frame. The image is 16"X16". Overall size is 18"X18".

Pasha's Pride Pasha's Pride is a fabulous and fairly rare print by the Old Master, Alfred Dedreux. This subtly dappled Arabian stallion has a red tasseled bridle and is handled by his master who is in soft velvet green with intricate gold brocade trim. He wears a red fez with plumed tassel. His brocaded overlayed boots complete his garb. It is an interesting study to read about the desert men and their horses and traditions. The horses, of course, were their most prized possessions and their world evolved around them. Dedreux went to Morocco early in his career and was so enamored of the horses there that he painted from his sketches of the horses for many years to come. This frame is circa 1860 and refinished with a deep mahogany wood-look embellished with very ornate, raised, gold molding with just a touch of patina. The patina nicely repeats the subtle greens in the background of the picture. These old oval frames were made of oak and because of the strength of their structure, many have survived the centuries! My good fortune and yours! Check out the companion framed print "The Nubien" which is a black Arabian. $199.00

The Nubien "The Nubien" is a fabulous and rare print by the Old Master, Alfred Dedreux. Dedreux painted almost exclusively horses, unlike his good friend, Gericault (whose horses I also admire). This is a black Arabian stallion with intricate golden detail on bridle, breastplate and stirrup. His master is regaled in full Morocan costume with plumed fez and golden ornate tapestry designing on his jacket and sleeves. Others are riding in the background also in full costume. I keep a selection of prints of Dedreux works and Gericaults (when I can find them) for future framing. I find antique frames wherever I can here in the country (a lifelong passion) and refinish them to fit my prints. (I am a retired, professional picture framer.) This frame is circa 1860 and refinished with a deep mahogany wood-look embellished with very ornate, gold molding. These old oval frames were made of oak and because of the strength of their structure, many have survived the centuries! My good fortune and yours! Check out the companion framed print "Pasha's Pride" which is a white Arabian with master in full costume. $199.00

Mr. Fox Although this print is not from The Old Master's collection, this fox has been such a good seller for me at horse shows and horse expos all over Virginia. Fox hunting is a very popular pastime here....a tradition that has gone on for centuries. The fox is no longer killed of course and many times only his scent is placed down. The pageantry and fun of this sport lives on in the "huntsman's pinks" and the "call to the hounds". Specially trained horses are needed and the "Master of the Hounds" maintains and improves his pack on a regular basis. No horse who would kick a hound is ever asked to return. My customers have bought this print for Masters of the Hounds, for Whippers-In and for friends who hunt. They exclaim that it is the perfect gift for the "man (or woman) who has everything". $89.00

Heading Home This stunning Fox Hunt print by A. Pater is so reminiscent of Alfred Munnings that that's what I originally thought it was. This artist is fantastic and I will try to find more of his works to frame. It is a reproduction print in a circa 1860-1900 frame. For the Great Room, Library or main hallway, this large piece sets an elegant tone. It has been professionally restored and refinished to three different tones; light rose brown on the outside, highly polished gold on the rich ornamentation and a deep rose brown on the inner liner. The picture has been professionally backed with screw-eyes and heavy wire. It has a dust jacket. Print itself is 22" X 18" Overall measurements are 29 1/2" X 25". $149.00 |
Drawn Blank This lovely soft print is a print of an engraving by E.G. Hester of the original painting by T.N.H. Walsh. It is a deliciously stormy day so typical of the weather for fox hunting. This fellow is obviously master of the hounds and is calling his troupe. His following awaits patiently in the background, but the fox is nowhere in sight, hence the title "Drawn Blank". The frame is authentic antique circa 1840-1920. It is gold toned with soft grayish verdigris antiquing. Each corner has an ornate fretwork very appealing to the age. The picture has been professionally backed with screw-eyes and heavy wire. It has a dust jacket. Overall measurements are 27"X 21". $149.00

A Gentleman Out Hunting with His Dogs
This a gorgeous big print by Francis Calcraft Turner. This artist was painting during the era of the famous George Stubbs and has apparently emulated his style. Not only is the horse and huntsman dressed in the elegant style of the period, but he is posing in a stunning landscape reminiscent of the huge estates of past times probably his own. It is a reproduction print in an antique style frame. The frame is softly antiqued with raised gold ornamentation.
The picture has been professionally backed with screw-eyes and heavy wire. It has a dust jacket. Print itself is 27" X 21". Overall measurements are 31 1/2" X 26".

The Masters Favorites John Frederick Herring (1795-1865) is the artist of this exquisite portrait entitled "The Masters Favorites". This is a print I had never seen before and I have researched Herring for years. Herring was famous for his short headed, dished faced horses. He owned a little gray Arabian and a bay horse, both of which he has depicted in many a painting. The frame is handsomely ornate. This is a small print 8"X10" framed to 9"X12" in an antique style frame. I use these little prints in a variety of ways, usually to complement larger pictures. You can stack 2 (one above the other) next to a larger print for balance. Or you can put them end to end at the bottom of a larger print. I have been known to group four together either in a perfect square or skewed to a diamond. Just so there is balance. I like variety on a wall and mixing larger prints with smaller ones is a dramatic way to do it. $19.00

A Lady in the Park Alfred Dedreux was an Old Master who hung out with Theodore Gericault in their youth. Whereas Gericault (and I love his horses too) painted many different subjects, Dedreux painted almost exclusively horses. Dedreux had been enthralled with the Arabian horse ever since his trip to Morocco early in his career. He painted from his many sketches of the horses for many years afterward. This is a beautiful lady riding sidesaddle in the park. The frame is appropriately ornate for the period of the original painting. This is a small print 8"X10" framed to 9"X12" in an antique style frame. I use these little prints in a variety of ways, usually to complement larger pictures. Remember, pictures do not have to match to be hung together, just complementary to each other. $19.00

A Golden Chestnut This image is by Ben Marshall (1768-1835). He is of the same era as the famous George Stubbs. It is entitled "A Golden Chestnut Racehorse". Golden is the key word here. This is an absolutely stunning image. It is sure to catch a viewers eye if he is in the same room with it. The frame is handsomely ornate in an antique style frame. This is a small print 8"X10" framed to 9"X12". I like variety on a wall and mixing larger prints with smaller ones is a dramatic way to do it.
